Ratcliff Passage taking shape
The newest and latest piece of public realm at Paradise is taking shape. Twelve Honey Locust ‘Skyline’, Gingko and Sweet Gun trees have now been planted on Ratcliff Passage and along Paradise Street.
A fitting and appropriate setting for Three Chamberlain Square and the Town Hall, Ratcliff Passage and its trees will help provide an appropriately civic setting for the space.
Alex Housden, senior development manager at Paradise Birmingham, said:
This is an important step forward to bring this new public realm fully to life, and we’re all looking forward to welcoming people to use this important new pedestrian route across the estate that also improves connectivity across the city.
“This public realm also provides a suitable setting for both Three Chamberlain Square and the Town Hall.”
Andy Towers, chief engineer at contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, said:
Planting these beautiful new trees brings an added piece of nature to Paradise and around Three Chamberlain Square.
“The journey from Van den Berk Nursery in the Netherlands to Birmingham took several days but with the help of Fira, MPB and the wider development team, we’re all proud to have brought these stunning trees safely to their new home.”

Helping to open up the estate further to the south and bring the Town Hall Metro stop closer to the nearby commercial buildings, Ratcliff Passage creates new connections across the city as well as high quality public space.
The species and individual trees selected were chosen for both their beauty and hardiness. As well as being monumental and colourful, especially in summer and autumn, the trees also bring another layer of interest and sense of nature to Paradise.
