Ensuring Phase Two of Paradise ties the new buildings and pedestrian routes together with the existing urban landscape is a key part of our public realm plans.

The new landscaping will help integrate this phase of the development with the successful new public spaces of Phase One, namely Chamberlain Square, Congreve Street and Centenary Way.

We want people to enjoy these new spaces as places to dwell and spend time in, as well as providing a legible and high-quality environment for those who are passing through to other parts of the city centre.

Designed by landscape architects Grant Associates, the use of granite and sandstone, already used throughout Phase One, is to be continued to ensure there is a coherent look across the estate.

The planters will provide casual seating options and new trees will be introduced to the scheme, including a feature tree forming the centrepiece for Ratcliff Square.

FAQs

What about new public realm?

Phase Two will deliver three new public spaces, as well as other public realm improvements. Ratcliff Passage adjacent to the Town Hall, Ratcliff Square in between One Centenary Way, the Hotel and Three Chamberlain Square, and the Western Terrace. These areas are a positive addition to the public spaces in Paradise and the wider city and will improve pedestrian access across the site and beyond.

This new public realm will be of the same high quality finish as the new spaces we’ve already created on Centenary Way, Congreve Street and Chamberlain Square.

Will there be public art as part of the new public realm?

Yes. Statues of Industrial Revolution era scientists Joseph Priestley and James Watt will return to their original historic settings alongside the Town Hall as part of Ratcliff Passage.

Who is paying for this?

The Paradise redevelopment is being brought forward through Paradise Circus Limited Partnership (PCLP), a private-public joint venture with Birmingham City Council.

The private sector funding is being managed by Federated Hermes International. MEPC is the development manager for Phases Two and Three.

Paradise sits in the country’s largest city centre Enterprise Zone and has already benefited from £139m investment by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) in enabling and infrastructure works.
