The spaces between

From the very outset of development, the vision for Paradise has been to reconnect the city to its people through the creation of great places in which to dwell and spend time.

The spaces between buildings offer significant social value and are just as important as the buildings themselves.

That’s why, from the revitalisation of historic civic squares to the creation of new plazas, Paradise is committed to creating inspiring outdoor spaces for the city.

Restoring the city’s civic heart

Chamberlain Square is an important part of Birmingham’s heritage, dating back to the Victorian era. Following remodelling in the 1970s, it became a dated and unloved thoroughfare rather than a place to spend time and enjoy the city’s outstanding civic architecture.

As the centrepiece of the Paradise development, it was integral that the square should be returned to its rightful place as the beating heart of a dynamic new city centre.

The restoration of the 140-year-old Chamberlain Memorial, along with the reinstatement of Birmingham Man, Sioban Coppinger’s 1993 bronze statue of Thomas Attwood, respected the square’s heritage and provided a vital link between old and new.

New public spaces

In addition to reinvigorating existing areas, Paradise will also create a network of vibrant new dwell spaces for the city, including tree-lined avenues, public squares and green spaces. These will cement the estate’s growing reputation as Birmingham’s go-to destination for outdoor relaxation, happenings and events.
